The boys and I will be reading “The God Hater” by Bill Myers this year. I’ve pulled together some resources for us to really dig into the book and thought you might enjoy them, too.
This is going to be an interesting school year. Logan is in his final lap and is scheduled to graduate in June. J (we really do call him that at home) is in his 8th grade year. Wasn’t I just bringing them home from the hospital? Heck, I can still see the “you ARE pregnant” line on the stick like that was an hour ago!
While I am still busy putting up the kindergarten studies that I did with the boys (my hope is to have all the grades up eventually) I am also putting together studies for my boys. Back in July I asked Logan and J to pick at least 20 books that Christian boys should read that from several tabs I had opened at the time.
Who Is Bill Myers?
I hate to tell you this but I have never ever heard of Bill Myers or any of his works. I know, I know, how is that even possible? He’s such a prolific Christian author. How could I have missed that he was the co-creator/writer/co-producer of Focus on the Family’s children’s video series, McGee and Me? I, uh, we haven’t… I guess that’s what happens when you don’t have cable TV. This is quite a resume!

Lewis Honor Award), and his best selling adult novels, Blood of Heaven, Fire of Heaven, Eli, Soul Tracker, The Face of God, and The Wager (also a motion picture staring Randy Travis). As a writer/director, his work has won over 60 national and international awards, and as an actor he was the voice of Jesus in the NIV Audio Bible and has made several guest appearances on Adventures in Odyssey. http://www.thegodhater.com/about.html[/note]
“The God Hater” Review
We are reading this book first because it was one of three RestaurantMan was able to find at the library and it was the first to fall out of the bag. I read it last weekend because I wanted to make sure that it was as good as the internet seemed to say that it was.
It isn’t just good, it is chock full of philosophy, and inquiry, and science, and… God.
- If you never understood the concept that God is three in one you will after reading this book.
- If you never understood how Jesus could take on the sins of the world you will after reading this book.
- If you never understood how his dying for our sins really worked you will after reading this book.
I had just meant to read about 3 chapters a day. I ended up reading it in 6 hours. Did I ever tell you that I read fast? But it’s not that I just read fast. This book was exciting with twists and turns.
In a nutshell, this computer geek guru creates a “Sims World” that is so real it’s scary. The money behind the project was hoping to use it for marketing purposes. The only problem is that the people of the world keep destroying themselves before it really gets off the ground. They try every philosophy model and yet nothing seems to work. That’s when they rope in the geek’s brother, a philosophy professor who is a leading atheist. The only problem is that as they delve deeper into the solution even he realizes that there is something to God’s plan of salvation and redemption.
I don’t want to give away too much of the story. That’s really hard for me because I am awful at keeping secrets!
How We Will Use The Book
This is what you came for, yes? Bill Myers wrote the book because as he taught high school and college level kids about the Bible he realized that they didn’t really understand the purpose behind all that God has done for us. As a teacher he made sure that there were plenty of resources for other teachers to educate their kids.
The best find on this site is the 1 week/4 week/6 week study plan. We’ll be using the 6 week plan, taking our time to study the characters, setting, theme, literary terms, and religious aspects.
I will especially use the printable comparison chart of world religions during this study. That will be helpful to discuss how other people around the world have tried to worship the created instead of the Creator.
We love to watch movies and will be watching Avatar (the one with the blue people not the one based on the cartoon), Inception, The Matrix, Religulous, Collision, Expelled, and Saved. This pdf will help me decide how to use these films with the reading.
What do you think? Is this a book you could use with your family or just a personal read for yourself? Let me know in the comments! We love hearing from you.
