April is National Poetry Month and to celebrate we’re going to be sharing the fun and exciting sites, lesson plans, and books we have enjoyed and loved. Poetry has been so much for us fun to study together.

Did you know that there is a Shel Silverstein official website?

My foster-mom was so excited when she gave us a copy of Shel Silverstein’s “Where the Sidewalk Ends” for L’s 3rd birthday. He would grab the book, sit in the old glider, and laugh for what seemed like hours.
We love reading Shel Silverstein’s poems and looking at the crazy drawings. As the boys got older we began to study writing our own poems.
Which led me to do some online research. Surely there had to be online lesson plans, or a video or two, to show how to teach about Shel Silverstein!
There is! Oh my goodness, yes, there is! Are you ready?
This is the homepage for Shel Silverstein’s Official Site for Kids. As you can see, there is a page for seeing what’s new, a page for all of his books, a page that tells about his life and work, and…
Did you see it there? Off to the far right. Yep, uh huh. A page filled with all kinds of ideas for teacher & parents. I can hear the angels sing, can’t you?
But, wait! There’s more! They have a full blown pdf chock full of teaching ideas complete with handy-dandy worksheets for your kids. It teaches about rhyming and different kinds of poems and well, it’s pretty darn amazing. Best thing is, it is (say it with me) FREE!
Finally, it just wouldn’t be an LJSkool post without a video. I wouldn’t want to disappoint.
You can find other videos at the official Shel Silverstein YouTube Channel.
So, happy poetry making! What have you used? What poems do your children love to read or listen to? Hmm… I wonder if I can convince Logan and Jordan to share their poetry masterpieces?
