Jerry Seinfeld’s show “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee“ is one of my guilty pleasures. I found it when I was sick last summer with Shingles. It made me laugh and forget all about my pain. Jerry Seinfeld and Netflix have recently decided to get into a beautifully restored classic car and make some more money together.
At the beginning of the show Jerry talks about the car he and his guest will be riding around in. He goes into detail about why it’s a classic, how the engine was made, yada yada. At first it’s annoying. You want him to get to the good stuff.
Except after a while you realize he really gets excited about cars. The nuance of the engine. The vroom of the muffler. The hum of the chassis. OK, yeah, I have no idea about cars. I do know that if you close your eyes and just listen to him talk about that car it is like she’s his newest girlfriend. It’s kind of romantic.
“Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” has racked up three Emmy nominations; most recently, in the variety talk series category, virtually unheard-of for a streaming service. “This has been such an exciting Lewis-and-Clark, ‘paddle down the river and see what’s down there’ adventure, there was no expectation of anything,” Seinfeld told Variety shortly after his nomination. “I’m flattered and humbled our little show has gotten this far. We didn’t even know if audiences would watch a TV show on the internet every week.” Variety Magazine
Then, he goes and picks up his guest. Now Jerry does some seriously crazy, in depth, research on these people because they are always, always, always beyond geeked to see this car. That is because it has something to do with their life. Either it was their first car or the car belonged to their dad or… Something special.
And already you feel all warm inside. They haven’t even begun driving around.
Yeah. That is what they do. They drive around. And chat like two best friends who haven’t seen each other since college graduation.
But it’s fun! Did I mention addictive?
The streaming service will spend $6 billion to churn out more than 1,000 hours of original content this year. A portion of that large sum of money will go to Seinfeld.
Hackhackcoughcough. He is already stinking filthy rich. Let’s just give him more!
Jerry does make us laugh. Reruns of his original show Seinfeld still playing at least once an hour somewhere in the world. He does help us forget that we are sore and cranky and overwhelmed with daily life even if it is just for just 30 minutes. Netflix is only paying him $6 billion? Oh, heck, why not 10? 20?
The man earns every penny of it. He keeps this mom happy when she can’t sleep at night.
Wait. That didn’t come out right. You know what I mean!
I tried to pick my most favorite episode. That was so hard. They all have wonderful moments. So, in honor of Barack Obama’s last days in office I give you his ride. The guy does have a great sense of humor and I appreciate that. Just click here to see it.
