It’s Friday! FRIDAY IS ART DAY!!!
Mind you, we study art on Monday and Wednesday. However, on Friday, we DO art.
Art is very beneficial for calming the ADHD brain. So many studies have been done on how it helps people heal and think. I won’t bore you with the scientific data. What I can tell you is that my boys LOVE art. We have all kinds of art supplies, paper, and various materials all at their disposal at any time.
Fridays are special at LJSkool, though. I find an artist to study and then the boys try to imitate what we’ve learned. They really love that the best. I only do this on Friday because, well, the boys really take their time creating. More about that later.
Right now, today, it is Friday.
That only means one thing. L & J will drag their feet…

They will keep asking if we can do art now. Now? How about now? Noooooooowwww? (Imagine hearing wolves bay at the moon.) We do art the last thing on Friday. I think of it the same as telling a kid that if they don’t cry when they get a shot they can get ice cream. They cry and we still go get ice cream. You know how that goes, right?
Being a very left brain, linear (some might say anal-retentive) thinker I’ve tried teaching them art history using the timeline. That gets boring. Quickly. There are just those times when all you want to do is get in there and get messy! Never fear! The art lesson plans at Dick Blick (R) are here! This is a cornucopia of art lessons which are separated discipline or (for our purposes) grade level.

We chose to do “The Secret Life of Your Pet” for our Friday afternoon lesson. I found the official website of George Rodigue and introduced the boys to “The Blue Dog”. The boys were inspired! We have tons of pictures of our Black Lab, known to the cyberworld as Ms. Thang. (She got that name after she ate my mattress because we were gone for two days at a homeschool conference. Apparently that was two more days than she was ready to be apart from us.)

Now you can see why the boys are like this all day Friday.
They live for this stuff.
